4 Line up a piece of 1/2 -in/1-cm board to a gap between two ladder rungs, and mark the gap on the wood with the pencil. All the gaps between the rungs should be identical, but you may want to double check before cutting all of the box material. Using the handsaw, cut two lengths to this size for each box you want.

5 Position two of the lengths into the top and bottom of the rung gap. Taking another piece of 1/2 -in/1-cm board and, using a pencil, mark onto it the distance between the box top and bottom; this will be the size of the box sides. Using a handsaw, cut the same quantity as you have tops and bottoms.

6 With the box sections cut out, decide on how deep you want the boxes to be. I decided on two side boxes at 41/4 in/11 cm deep and a middle box at a deeper 61/4 in/16 cm. Mark the sections with the measurements for the depth, clamp them to a work surface, and cut to size along the pencil lines with a handsaw.
